Not that "poppy-gate" ever stood to overshadow the game. John Terry remains the focus of attention leading up to the match, and although he has been selected in the squad, some will view his inclusion as a controversial move, given everything that is going on at the moment. However, most of the media reports leading up to the Spanish game had him missing from the starting eleven, with Frank Lampard (not necessarily guaranteed a starting position now), taking over as captain. Also missing will be Wayne Rooney, although this is because Capello wants to plan without him as he is likely to miss three games at the European Championships. Continue reading →

This isn’t to say I am one of those ‘I don’t care about England’ types. Far from it. I am a passionate England supporter and always will be. The club v country row is of course one that can take up much discussion, but why do they have to be mutually exclusive?

I’m as passionate a Norwich fan as you can get, but will I be supporting England next summer and either be gutted or elated at their performance? Of course. Continue reading →

A full house at Wembley would suggest not. Most England games since Wembley was re-opened four years have had decent attendances, so it’s either blind support of the team (and after last year in South Africa, it must be), or the “new stadium” factor is still in full swing. It’s hard to imagine it getting the same as with Wales, who have only managed to sell out Cardiff twice in god knows how many years, and both of those games were against England, but it’s possible. I can remember going to England home games at the old stadium when there were about 25,000 there. And it was still hard work getting to the station afterwards. Continue reading →

A popular football phrase for a flash of on the field brilliance before it was replaced with modern day Sky nonsense such as ‘take a bew, son’ or ‘unbelievable tekkers’ is the more traditional ‘that was worth the admission price alone’ or variations thereof. Neath invested in their own brand of tekker-potential in the summer with the signing of Lee Trundle headlining the arrival of a number of former Football League stars with significant Swansea City connections, and while the flashes of brilliance have been few and far between, a new initiative by the South Wales club seems set to backfire spectacularly. Continue reading →

Much of the pre-match media coverage seemed to surround two main topics. The first was the re-appointment of John Terry to the England captaincy, into which most people fell into two camps; either he shouldn’t have been sacked in the first place, or it shouldn’t have been given back to him. The reaction to this in most of the media was that Capello had lost control of the squad, but in the end, the appointment of Rio Ferdinand hasn’t really worked for the simple reason that he seems to have been injured most of the time. Whether you agree or not with the decision, the fact is that, about a year after losing the armband, it was now being given back to the Chelsea defender. Continue reading →

And with friends in the city such as Ivar we certainly knew where we would be drinking pre-game, and guess what? It wasn't the Irish (and Scottish) bars that most of the other travelling fans were going to head to. It still makes me shake my head why people do this, and then complain that they are paying £8-£10 for a pint. Copenhagen has hundreds of bars where beer is comparable in price to London. But of course Economics lesson 101 is charge higher prices where tourists gather. And what better than offering a full English breakfast, Only Fools and Horses on DVD and pictures of Dogs playing snooker to justify charging a huge premium for beer. Continue reading →

The Rooney answer came on the day the England team flew out to Switzerland as the News of the World revealed his "£1,200 a night hooker romp" whilst Colleen was pregnant. Not that this was the biggest shock. To me it was the fact that he paid someone £200 to get a packet of fags whilst staying at the Lowry Hotel - what was he thinking about? Surely he should have take precautions and bought them on his way in? With at least two other football "gagging" orders still in place on players in and around the squad, all was not happy. But surely it wouldn't distract the team from the task at hand, would it? Continue reading →

I became a realist England fan about 18 months ago. I missed only two away games (excluding the farce in Trinidad & Tobago) in over 5 years and during that period bought my numerous away shirts, was fleeced by my own FA over things such as ticket prices (more expensive to watch a friendly v Slovenia at Wembley than the competitive game against Croatia for instance, or the 300% mark up on the home versus away tickets in Moscow in October 2007) and even turned out on a number of occasions for the official England Fans Veterans team. Continue reading →
