Two years ago I wrote an article about the worst supported league in Europe an honour won by Estonia's Meistriliiga with its average attendance of just 160. Since then, thanks to the bizarre changes put in place by UEFA President it is now easier than ever for the Estonian Champions to progress in the Champions League. This season Flora Tallinn lost in the second qualifying round to Shamrock Rovers. Should have had won in this tie they could have been drawn against other small sides such as Rangers, Benfica and FC Copenhagen Continue reading →

Take Saturday 14th April. At 2.15pm 87,231 supporters left Wembley Stadium after the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Everton. 45 minutes later (when most of those fans were standing in hideously lengthy queues for trains outside Wembley Park) Hendon FC kicked off an important play-off chasing match with just 224 supporters watching. When you add to the mix that, showing one’s semi-final ticket, admission to the game was only £5 it’s staggering that, as far as I’m aware, I was the only one at both games. Given that Budweiser sponsor both the FA Cup and now Wembley FC where Hendon play you’d have thought some promotion of the latter’s game could have easily drawn at least 100-200 supporters over from Wembley, to watch Hendon, and The Grand National, and use their bar. Of course this is an extreme example but with the need for cash lower down the game, I’d have thought promotion of games to get fans in is essential, after all 100 extra fans at this game would’ve resulted in £750+ extra on the takings. (The crazy thing is, when I left Hendon there were still supporters queuing for trains home from Wembley). Continue reading →

If you ever wanted proof that the weather dominates our lives here in England then let me take you back two weeks to when London Skolars last home game against the South Wales Scorpions was called off by the referee 30 minutes before kick off due to the rain which had made parts of the pitch unplayable. Two weeks on and there would have been some who would have wanted this game off due to temperatures hitting the high 80's at pitch side. The Thunder had brought a fair few fans, which considering the run of form they are on was mighty impressive. Continue reading →

Football economics rarely change, despite the meddling of the likes of UEFA. The plan to include more "smaller" clubs in the Champions League has hardly changed a think. We occasionally see the odd surprise, such as APOEL from Cyprus who got to the Champions League Quarter Finals (playing teams from Russia, Portugal, Ukraine and France on the way - not one of the big four leagues) but it really is the exception rather than the rule. Continue reading →
