The opening exchanges were fast and frantic. Eastbourne had the better of the opening exchanges but then the Lewes midfield got hold of the ball, and Mel Kamara started powering forward from midfield. In a space of a few first half minutes Michael Malcolm showed that when luck is not on your side, nothing rolls for you. First he powered a header against the inside of the post, with the Eastbourne keeper stranded and then he saw his goal-bound toe poke trickle slowly towards an unguarded net only for it to be cleared by a last gasp sliding tackle. Half time - all square in love and war. Continue reading →

Mark Hughes has moved quickly to improve QPR's chances of achieving survival in this season's Premier League by securing Nedum Onuoha from former club Manchester City on a four-year deal. The versatile defender is exactly the sort of player this QPR side needed, and could well be the signing the club needed to be able to shore up their leaky defence. Continue reading →

If a week is reckoned to be a long time in politics, then two and a half weeks supporting a football team can be almost a lifetime. Seventeen days ago, we gained a very creditable 0-0 draw with Millwall in the FA Cup, which stretched our unbeaten run to seven games. Hopes were high then for our home game against Hereford. However, that turned out to be a total non-event, and resulted in a 0-1 defeat.

The replay at Millwall ended in a one-sided scoreline, with us suffering a 0-5 defeat, before another “six-pointer” at Crewe on the weekend. Continue reading →

Up until the early nineties, Espanyol played in the city centre, at the Sarria Stadium. This was one of the venues for the 1982 World Cup, and hosted one of the finest games ever played, when Italy beat Brazil 3-2 (thanks to a Paolo Rossi hat-trick) in the second round. From there, the club moved out to the Olympic Stadium, and stayed until about eighteen months ago, when they finally got their own stadium. It’s one of the first “new” stadiums to be built in Spain, and the club are rightly proud of it. Continue reading →

The second half saw the wind drop for awhile, and was replaced by rain. As Dolly Parton once said, you need the rain before you can have the rainbow and sure enough it appeared soon after, distracting most of the 229 people in the ground for a few minutes. Farsley continued to attack but they simply could not break down a dogged Warrington defence. The away fans, complete with drum, big flag and a man holding a stopwatch (who occasionally shouted out random times to the crowd around him) looked on nervously, feeling a home goal coming before too long. Continue reading →

Brendan Rodgers made just one change to the side that started against Arsenal six days ago, as loan signing Gylfi Sigurdsson was handed his full Swansea debut, following a sensational second half performance last weekend.

The Swans should have no shame in the manner in which they lost the game on Saturday, with it taking a sublime strike either side of the interval to condemn the Welsh side to their eighth defeat of the campaign. Continue reading →

I have no issue with clubs offering special pricing and promotions for fans. I agree it is necessary to try and get new fans through the door. But when it is at the expense of the loyal supporters then that is another thing. Tickets for this game went on sale to members back in December, priced from £32 for Adults and £19 for Children. In fact you could actually get a free kids ticket if they were members of the "Academy" - the junior Hammers for want of a better word. So these members, who pay £40+ for the scheme, of which is the priority to buy tickets over non members would have paid a minimum of £32 for their ticket, yet any Tom Dick or Harry who reads the Evening Standard can get in for £10 less. Fair? I do not think so. Continue reading →

Now where was I ? Right, we'd just got into the stadium, blagged a programme and were surveying the savannah. The stadium was pretty full, it was the first game back after the winter break (an Oxymoron if ever I heard one - Winter break in the "summer season") and the main stand, which had capacity for about 500 was burgeoning. The was a very small barmy army of expats bouncing up and down, obviously looking for their football fix but with 2 kiddies in tow, I decided we'd stay down the cleaner language end. The highlight from this bunch was a rendition of 'I am a City fan, I live in Sandringham' to the tune of Anarchy in the UK. I was kindly informed by a nearby fan that number 9 or 11 had scored - that accurate and as I write this, with little Internet connectivity, I'm still none the wiser. I was pleasantly surprised with the skill level on show. There was some obvious quality on display but also some obvious lack of it. Continue reading →

It is amazing to think that clubs were average attendances sometimes barely break 2,000 can muster ten or twenty times that when there is a cup final in the offing. Take the example of last season's FA Trophy Final. Darlington played local rivals Mansfield Town at Wembley Stadium. The attendance? 24,668 which was less than in previous years. Nearly 15,000 had come down the M1 from Nottinghamshire for their first appearance at Wembley Stadium. Yet in the fixtures between the two sides earlier in the season the crowds had been 2,234 and 1,614 respectively. The magic of the cup eh! Continue reading →
